The third\u00a0poem in my Seasons quartet<\/em><\/p>\n

\n

The greatest show on earth is found in ground and nooks and brooks,<\/p>\n

Wherever there are lovers, and where every child looks,<\/p>\n

Where wild stretching fauna finds a corner yet to fill,<\/p>\n

Of every downing valley, and of every crowning hill.<\/p>\n

The fullest time of life is of sublime, empowered green,<\/p>\n

And blue that boldly dares the red to share its flowered scene,<\/p>\n

Of light that warms the days, and night delights that warm the heart,<\/p>\n

Of cuddling and kissing, missing days for love of art.<\/p>\n

The very soul of Summer is the youth of human time,<\/p>\n

That bounds across the meadows to meander, leap, and climb<\/p>\n

Between the laden branches, taking chances, making dares,<\/p>\n

Faking grand adventures to recite at village fayres,<\/p>\n

Where chubby girls will peck their cheeks then hide behind the hay,<\/p>\n

And men will kneel in promises to hold a wedding day.<\/p>\n

We see the purpose in our lives from every darling friend,<\/p>\n

To share with us and care and fuss for endless months on end.<\/p>\n

The gallant Prince of Summer merges swimmers with the streams,<\/p>\n

And has his fun conducting all the lyric-birds\u2019 bright themes,<\/p>\n

And might on odd occasion paint horizons full of dreams.<\/p>\n

He gaily strides through days and prides the honour, his to keep,<\/p>\n

That he will be remembered as a time of restful sleep,<\/p>\n

The ember of a campfire that\u2019s held as a keepsake,<\/p>\n

But the fire\u2019s glow must dither, and the dreamer must awake.<\/p>\n

The storybook of August, with its gloried illustrations,<\/p>\n

Its tentative last pages\u2019 ostentatious aspirations,<\/p>\n

And hopes to all the ages that it will not be forgot,<\/p>\n

As cover comes to cover and sun comes to its cot.<\/p>\n
